We compare characteristics of people, objects or places. One-syllable adjectives: big, sweet,.... Adjectives than end in –y: easy, pretty Adjectives with 2 or more syllables:honest, useful

Adj. that ends in 1 vowel and consonant Ad. that ends in 2 vowels and 1 consonant Adj. that ends two or more consonants Adj that ends in -e Bigger, hotter, wetter Sweeter, cheaper Older, longer Nicer, wiser, finer

He’s even taller than I imagined. This subject is much more boring than the other. Less emphatic. A little/ a bit / no + adj This ticket was only a little cheaper I felt a bit nervous than usual in the interview. They looked no more interested than they usually do.

Superlative expressions
In + places and group of people He ‘s the brightest person in the office It’s the largest collection in the world. Of + things It is the longest day of the year. Subject+verb He’s the most qualified engineer I know.

Comparative vs superlative
We compare two things. The factory is further away than you think I have an older brother in Boston. We compare something to the whole group. The head office is the most modern of the building. He was the funniest speaker at the conference.

Comparative adverbs: comparing two actions
Mr Jones drives more slowly than his wife He speaks English less fluently than you You can travel more quickly by plane. Notice that it isn’t always necessary to use than after the comparative adv.

Comparative; adverbs= adjectives
Some comparative have the same form . Fast, hard, early, late, loud. Jeremy runs faster than his brother. She arrives at work earlier than her colleague. He arrived later than usual because of the heavy traffic. The second hotel is better than the first one.
