2 The Earth receives 99.9% of all its energy through radiation from the sun.

3 but that’s only 1/2,000,000,000th of the Sun’s Energy- The rest is LOST into space.

4 ~20% of energy is absorbed in the atmosphere (ozone layer)
When the sun’s radiation enters the Earth’s Atmosphere, it’s used in three different ways… B. ~50% is absorbed by Earth’s surfaces and heats up the troposphere by radiation A. ~20% of energy is absorbed in the atmosphere (ozone layer) C. ~30% of energy is reflected back to SPACE by clouds and snow. 6 Greenhouses are great for growing things…otherwise it would be too cold!

7 But too much greenhouse gases make it too hot and dangerous for things living within it.

8 Greenhouse gasses include:
Water Vapor (H20) (Why??) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Nitrous Oxide (NO2- Laughing Gas!!) Methane (CH4) Ozone (O3)

9 Clouds act like a blanket at night.

10 Clouds reflect sunlight during the day, making the Earth cooler.

11 Less energy reaches the poles due to the angle that the rays are hitting the poles and the amount of atmosphere that the rays must travel through to get to the poles. Compare the lines! The same amount of energy covers a smaller amount of space at the equator. The Sun’s Energy

12 If more energy is being absorbed in the tropics, this creates a LOW pressure near the equator. At the poles, there is little energy absorbed creating a HIGH pressure. Cooler The Sun’s Energy HOTTER Cooler

13 The Earth’s rotation every 24 hours means only one side of the earth is being heated at a time creating, high and low pressure on different parts of the earth. The Sun’s Energy

14 To complicate matters, the Earth rotates on its axis every day and is tilted 23.5 degrees. Making the air move in strange ways and differently each day and each season.

15 Light is absorbed or reflected off the Earth’s surface, causing some areas to be warm, and some to be cool.

18 Urban Heat Island Effect is caused by asphalt heating up quickly in the cities.

19 Warm water rises and cold water falls causing ocean currents
