How these dialects play out in a relationship
Internal dialects - Ongoing tensions played out within the relationship External dialects - Ongoing tensions between a couple and their community

Integration- Separation *Connection vs Autonomy *Inclusion vs Seclusion *Intimacy vs Independance
If one side wins, the relationship loses. Too much connection destroys the relationship because individual identities become lost.

Stability- Change. Certainty vs Uncertainty
Stability- Change * Certainty vs Uncertainty * conventionality vs uniqueness * Predictability vs Surprise * routine vs novelty People strive for predictability in their relationships (certainty) We seek mystery, spontaneity, and the occasional surprise necessary for fun (uncertainty)
