Annotating Text: What It Is, What It Isn’t, and Why You Should Be Doing It.

What is Annotating? Annotating is any action that deliberately interacts with a text to enhance the reader's understanding of, recall of, and reaction to the text. Sometimes called "close reading," annotating usually involves highlighting or underlining key pieces of text and making notes in the margins of the text.

Use a colored pencil or pen – no highlighters! Use highlighters ONLY for unfamiliar vocabulary – you should then look up the word and write a short definition in the margin or the end of the article Number the paragraphs. Paragraph numbers act as a reference so you can easily refer to specific sections of the text. Circle Key Terms, Names of People, Names of Places, and or Dates

Annotating Text Underline an Author’s Claims: A claim is an arguable statement or assertion made by the author. Use arrows to make comments in the margins. Summarize at various points while reading; write a statement or two at the end that summarizes the entire article. Use symbols [these are on the chart]

Let’s Practice! 1. Highlight the author and publication date. Write the citation next to it. 2. Number the paragraphs. 3. Read the article WITHOUT making any annotations; the only marks you should make are to highlight unfamiliar vocabulary. 4. Re-read the article and annotate.
