Love at First Sight Synthesis Decomposition Single-Displacement Double-Displacement The Big Break-Up My Best Friend’s Girlfriend Sweet Revenge

4 Synthesis—”Love at first sight”
A reaction when two or more substances react to form a single product. In this reaction, simple compounds make more complex ones. *Notice there are no plus signs on the right side of the arrow (in most situations).

5 Decomposition—”The Big Break-Up”
A reaction when a single reactant decomposes (breaks down) into two or more products. In this reaction, more complex compounds make less complex ones. It’s the complete opposite of a synthesis reaction! *Notice that there are no plus signs on the left side of the arrow (in most situations).

6 Single-Displacement—”My Best Friend’s Girlfriend”
A reaction when a more reactive element replaces another. In this reaction, one atom takes the place of another.

7 Double-Displacement—”Sweet Revenge”
A reaction when ions (elements) will switch partners. In this reaction, atoms trade places.

8 Types of reactions picture id
Around the room on blue paper, there are 15 pictures depicting the 4 types of reactions. With a partner, figure out what type of reaction each picture represents. Write your answers in your composition book. Once you’ve finished, pick up a Chapter 13 Study Guide from the front table. You may sit with your partner and QUIETLY work on the study guide. This will be due on Tuesday and it is a check grade!
