1 What you need to know about doing this subject!
ATAR GEOGRAPHY What you need to know about doing this subject!

2 Why do the subject? Geography inspires us to become global citizens by exploring our own place in the world, our values and responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet. Geography is not only up-to-date and relevant; it is one of the most exciting, adventurous and valuable subjects to study today. So many of the world’s current problems boil down to geography and there is a need for geographers in the future to help us understand them. Global warming, spread of disease, future energy resources are just some of the challenges facing the next generation of geographers” Michael Palin – Patron of the Royal Geography Society.

3 Geography enables students to:
Know where they are and know what is there. Develop their understanding of the environment, the natural world and the social environment Provide a vocabulary to describe the features of the environment Understand the spatial layout and organization of the world about us Develop their understanding and appreciation of places, of their importance to us, of their impact on us and of how we can manage and develop them Develop a sense of stewardship for our world, at a local and global scale Recognise and value our interdependence with other people in our own area and in the wider world Appreciate the diversity evident in the world among peoples and environments

4 Geography skills employers want:
Collecting, analyzing and synthesizing information Research, creative thinking and organizational skills Communicating ideas, issues and arguments using written and/or oral and multimodal forms Problem solving and decision making skills Ability to effectively use databases, spatial software applications and a range of graphic representations using spatial technologies

5 Geography – the course What kinds of things will I learn about in this course? You will learn about hazards and the risk they pose to people and environments including environmental diseases/pandemics (infectious diseases, animal-transmitted diseases) and/or plant and animal invasions. You will also learn about globalization and its impact. What kinds of skills do the successful students in the course have? Successful students have good short answer, extended answer and data analysis skills. They are prepared to commit time each day to keep up to date with their course work and to revise their work.

6 Course combinations  Will this course require me to miss other classes? In Year 11 and Year 12 you will go on an excursion each semester as part of your inquiry research. What other courses go well with this course? Past students have found this course combines well with ATAR English, Earth and Environmental Science, Economics, Mathematics, Outdoor Education and Religion and Life.

7 Assessment What kinds of assessment will I do? There are many opportunities to succeed in Geography. The four types of assessment include geographical inquiry, fieldwork/practical skills, short and extended responses and examinations.

8 Most enjoyable aspects
