1 Limiting Factors, Carrying Capacity, & Matter Cycles
Ecology 6.0 Limiting Factors, Carrying Capacity, & Matter Cycles

2 Limiting Factors Limiting Factors- resources or other factors in the environment that limit population growth. Examples: Food, Water, Habitat(shelter), Nutrients, Space.

3 Limiting Factors

4 When plenty of resources, populations can grow and grow and grow

5 Competition Competition- when populations have to compete for resources like food and space, the growth rate stops increasing for that population.

6 2 types of competition Intraspecific Competition
Interspecific Competition

7 Intraspecific Competition
Intraspecific Competition- when members of the same species compete for resources(food, mates).

8 Interspecific Competition
Interspecific Competition- Members of different species compete for resources(food, space).

9 How many different predators?

10 Carrying Capacity Carrying Capacity- (K) is the maximum population size that can be supported in a particular area without destroying the habitat.

11 Carrying Capacity Dependent on limiting factors -food -space -shelter -nutrients

12 Example Let’s say that you can only have a family the size of how many bedrooms there are in your house. How many family members can you have?

13 In my apartment 4 years ago

14 2 bedrooms= only me and my wife. We can’t have a kid
2 bedrooms= only me and my wife. We can’t have a kid. We have to sell Beckett.

15 What is the limiting factor?
In a habitat that has enough water, cover and space to support 20 rabbits, there is only enough food for ten rabbits. What is the limiting factor? How many rabbits can live there?

16 What is the limiting factor?
Limiting factors are things that prevent a population from growing any larger. For example, 10 rabbits may live in a habitat that has enough water, cover and space to support 20 rabbits, but if there is only enough food for ten rabbits, the population will not grow any larger.

17 What is the Carrying Capacity?

18 Matter Cycles Water Carbon. * Oxygen Nitrogen *
