2 A teacher is ... Assorted quotes on teaching are put on the walls. Course participants (CPs) mingled, read the quotes and chose their favourites. Then they sit down and talk to a partner about which quote they chose and why.

4 Starting off The trainer introduces herself to the group, then elicits the info back with cues.

7 Let's speak English! The trainer introduces the issue of the amount of English used in the classroom. English or L1 in class?

8 Why? Who? Why? In most cases it is the Ss’ only opportunity to hear and use English Who? Maximise the talking time of both students and teacher What? – this leads into the next activity. What?

9 Teacher talk greetings beginnings and endings
asking students to do things explaining new language modelling new language giving activity instructions checking work correcting mistakes giving praise This is a checklist of the main categories into which teacher talk in the classroom fall. CPs work in groups with the Teacher talk cards and a large sheet of cardboard with a Venn diagram on.

10 English French Teacher talk
CPs discuss which language they use to perform the different teacher talk tasks and arrange the cards on the diagram. All CPs agree that it is best to use as much English as possible at all time. The trainer suggests that, especially for non-native teachers, the best principle to follow with new classes of beginners is a step-by-step one.
