The Spanish-American War in 1898 marks the time when the United States emerges or begins to become a WORLD POWER Before this the United States was not looked at as a major World Power

Monroe Doctrine- The U.S. will not interfere in European affairs, but will not let Europe interfere in the Americas
Isolationism- Avoid conflicts with other countries whenever possible
