Nando’s Adverts Are they offensive and if so why?

Nando’s has used comical advertising which pushes on South African issues, and has received bans for some of their adverts.

Nandos advert banned because of insensitivity to Xenophobia by Lisa Golden June 7, 2012 at 1:50 pm

The advert starts with the line “You know what is wrong with South Africa? It’s all you foreigners”. The advert then depicts the broad span of ethnic groups that live in South Africa disappearing in puffs of smoke, leaving only a Koi San man, who then says to the camera, “I’m not going anywhere. You found us here.” The follow up is “real South African’s love diversity”, with a promotion of a new meal package. The SABC refused to run the ad due it its “xenophobic undertones”. Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told Business Day, “By the time they get to the diversity message, people could have interpreted it in any which way.” “With foreigners being attacked in South Africa, our concern is that it might re-enforce that … We are in no way interested in commercial gain over the public’s interest,” Kganyago said.

Nando’s marketing manager Thabang Ramogase believes the response on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook has confirmed that the majority of South Africans had enjoyed the satire and understood the message of the ad. “I’m puzzled by how the media owners have actually banned the commercial, they’ve completely misunderstood it, and I’m incredibly disappointed because I think it says a lot about freedom of speech and freedom of expression in South Africa,” said Quinton Cronje, Nandos’ marketing director.

In what ways might the advert have Xenophobic undertones

Julius wants change In the run-up to the 2009 elections, this Nando's ad poked fun at then-ANCYL president Julius Malema's call for change. Last year, Nando's was forced to scrap radio and television adverts mocking Malema as a puppet canvassing for votes for change - just before the April elections. The ANC Youth League had threatened to boycott the fast food chain - or, in its lingo, "take militant actions" against Nando's.

Why is Malema depicted as a puppet
Why is Malema depicted as a puppet? Is it acceptable to make fun of people/politicians in the media? Discuss Is it acceptable to use adverts to make political statements? Discuss. Who might this advert offend and why? What are the motivations of the writers behind the advert? Explain.

Sexist Nandos Advert While this commercial does do a good job at emphasizing the product which is a double-breasted burger; I believe this commercial does portray women, or at least this customer, as incompetent and pretentious. While the depiction of women in this commercial is salvaged by the actions of the waitress, the damage done by the ridiculously idiotic and absurd representation of the woman customer is clearly already done.

What does sexist mean. What is sexist about this advert
What does sexist mean? What is sexist about this advert? What stereotype of women does it promote? Why do we find it funny? Who might is offend?

Polygamy ad set to ruffle feathers March at 09:58am After its duel with Julius Malema, a fast food chain is provoking President Jacob Zuma by advertising a meal for South Africans with several wives, with a customer already complaining that the campaign is promoting "infidelity". However, Nando's has used a white polygamous character and multiracial spouses to, perhaps, avoid any racial connotations levelled against its campaign. The advert, first flighted on television a few weeks ago, is expected to ruffle feathers with Zuma's defenders.

The ANC, through its spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi, said on Sunday it would "analyse" the advert before commenting. In its latest instalment, Nando's features a white man endorsing the so-called Mzansi meal for men with multiple wives, and promises to "give only i-best to ama-visitors". Nando's brand manager Thulani Mahlangu said the new advert was not directed at Zuma's polygamy but was "just a play on stereotypes and misconceptions" about Africans. Nando's added that so far only one person had lodged a complaint against the "extremely distasteful and offensive" advert.

Who might find this advert extremely offensive and why
Who might find this advert extremely offensive and why? What are the stereotypes or misconceptions that it plays around with? What are your thoughts about polygamy and do you think it has a place in South Africa?
