2 Origins of the War… Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to Austro-Hungarian throne) assassinated by Bosnian-Serb Gavrilo Princip on 28th June 1914 Austro-Hungary declares war on Serbia (July Ultimatum) Drags in other powers who had signed alliances to protect each others’ interests (There were other reasons for the war too)

Bulgaria Allied Forces: The Russian Empire France The British Empire Italy (eventually) the US Lost: 3.5 million men Wounded: 8.5 million Lost: 5.1 million men Wounded: 13 million

5 The Battles Continue… Until…. 1917-
The new Bolshevik government led by Lenin, withdrew from the war (Russia) USA joined the Allied forces (why did the US join the war)

6 Battle of Amiens (August 1918)
Allied Forces cut through barbed wire set by Germans German army is pushed back to where they were in 1914

7 American forces were overwhelming-sending 10,000 troops to Europe a day
Germany had no choice but to seek an end to the war Wilson demanded the Kaiser abdicate

8 With the defeat of Germany, the Central Powers collapsed immediately.

9 11th November 1918 Eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month a ceasefire came into effect

10 1919- The Treaty of Versailles
Marked the end of four empires: The German The Ottoman The Austro-Hungarian The Russian The most lasting consequences of the war were the enormous war reparations Germany was forced to pay to the Allied powers. To add insult to injury Germany was forced to accept responsibility for the war.

12 Your Task: As a group you need to do some research on World War Two from the information packs provided. You will then need to produce a ‘pupil friendly’ summary of the second world war! (similar to the one I did on WW1) You can design PowerPoint slides, comic strips or even storyboards. It’s up to you!
