1 Element Research Project

2 Step 1: Pick 7 Elements There are 118 elements on the Periodic Table. Choose 7 elements (You will submit them in Google Classroom as part of the project) from a variety of groups. Element from Group 1 (Li, Na, or K) Element from Group 2 (Be, Mg, or Ca) Element from Nonmetals (H, C, N, O, P, or S) Element from Group 7 (F, Cl, Br, or I) Element from Transition Metals (Ti, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pd, Ag, W, Pt, Au, or Hg) Element from Lanthanide/Actinide Series Free choice of element (choose wisely based off research)

3 Step 2: Research For each element answer the following questions.
a. What is the element's name, atomic symbol, atomic mass, and atomic number? b. How many protons, neutrons, and electrons does the element have? Are there multiple stable isotopes? What is the electron configuration for this element? c. What is the element's electronegativity, atomic radius, and ionization energy?

4 Research Con’t d. What is the natural state of matter for the element?
e. Find 3 physical properties and 2 chemical properties for the element and list them. f. What is this element used for? (Real world applications) g. Write down one interesting fact about the element that you found in your research. You must cite all your sources for your research in MLA format.

5 Step 3: Present your work
There are 3 ways to present your information. Create a Google Slides presentation and submit digitally. Create an Element Book: Physical: See directions and submit to Mr. Escott. Digital: Use Google Docs and submit digitally. Create an Element Collage (Poster): Show each element in it’s own section of the poster with all the research you did and submit to Mr. Escott.

6 What about Groups? If you want to work together you may, but the maximum group size is 2 and the requirements for research are higher. On Step 1: Pick 10 elements (2 Nonmetals, 2 Transition metals and 2 free choice elements). On Step 2: e. Find 4 physical properties and 3 chemical properties for the element and list them. and g. Write down two interesting facts about the element that you found in your research.

7 Grades and Due Dates The final project is due October 3rd/4th
Work days: 9/19 or 9/20 (after test) and 9/25 (entire period) Points: 100 point for the research project 30 points for the work day(s) 20 points for the checkpoint (Google Form)
