Vertical / horizontal drilling in soil and

MAJOR PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES
During the excavation of the tunnel various extreme problem was faced in tunneling construction: Buried channel in glaciated oveburden, Ingress of water in shear zone , fault and deeply weathered rock, Collapses, cavities at different faces due to flowing ground mass. Consolidation of rock mass became prime importance for further progress of work. A joint inspection conducted between the AD Hydro Power Project officials, Geotech consultants and ANP Geo infra Team to find a solution so that the project construction timeline is also not hampered. Thus, Consolidation grouting by OPC and Micro fine cement, & Chemical grouting with Polyurethane DI-n-Butyl phthalate (PU-10) was proposed to carry out to stabilize the rock mass.

Slope & rock Protection can be triggered by many factors such as surface erosion, scouring, gravity, climate change, seismic events, water influence etc. Structures designed to protect the areas around a slope from falling rocks include mesh or cable nets, barriers and fences, and catchment areas. These devices allow rocks to fall but prevent them from causing any damage to a structure or the public. The protection can stop a rock, control its trajectory, reduce its energy, and/or provide a catchment.

SLOPE STABILIZATION OF HILL SIDE AT NORTH PORTAL APPROACH ROAD, J&K
A 9.2 km long tunnel (Chenani-Nashri Tunnel) was constructed which is having about 2 km approach road from Chenani town similarly 800m approach road at Nashri end.. Rock slope protection work for North Portal was a big challenge due to highly unstable loose soil and boulder for almost vertical height of 65 meters from road level and that too without suitable approach to shift the machinery to desired location for execution. The site was initially proposed to be treated with shotcrete but persistent seepage of water which caused slope failures and cracks on the portals the concessionaire to go for an alternate solution which doesn’t only stabilize the slopes but also offers a green solution and lets the hydrostatic pressure to disperse.

SLOPE STABILIZATION OF HILL SIDE AT NORTH PORTAL APPROACH ROAD, J&K
Total area of 27800m² slopes treated and protected with High tensile steel wire mesh and geo green blanket which includes 4 berms and the top path up to a maximum height of 70 meters approximately. Each berm is stabilized using rock-bolts of a maximum depth of 20 meters in conjunction with high tensile steel wire mesh. Perforated drain pipes of 12 m length wrapped with geotextile, at an interval of 4 m x 4 m are also installed to allow excess water to pass. In addition to this, vertical and horizontal drainage channels are provided to channelize rain and excess water to pass and not accumulate and seep under the slopes. Variable grid patterns of 2m x 2m and 2.5m x 2.5m are adopted on this project depending upon the site conditions. 32 mm Ø, fully threaded rock-bolts are used in this project and total drill depth achieved 87,652 meters.

Case Study: NHAI FOR FOUR LANING OF UDHAMPUR TO CHENANISECTION OF NH-1A (NOW NH-44) FROM KM TO KM IN THE STATE OF JAMMU & KASHMIR During the Road Construction it is observed that few towers are coming in alignment to road excavation & cutting making towers vulnerable , towers are old , base structure is old , foundation and base concrete structure will not permit such narrow cutting and road movement vibrations even if they are in perfect form. 89 nos of towers identified for shifting by TLMD Department. Issue was reviewed on and felt shifting of tower will be difficult. Finally decided to avoid shifting of towers by adopting various measures like reducing the median width, realignment and special protection measures etc. For the same, joint site visit was conducted with NHAI Authority Engineer and Contractor Gammon India Ltd Design Team and Consultants and Local Electricity Authorities on 21st & 22nd November During the same at every tower location all the possibilities were discussed includes improvement in highway geometry, realignment of towers option and special protection measures such as Structural Strengthening by method of Micro Piling.

CASE STUDY: TUNNEL PORTAL STABILIZATION PROJECT, KIRATPUR- NER CHOWK, EXPRESSWAY, BILASPUR, J& K
The Portal of Tunnel is placed in an unstable hillside, which could have been caused by the elevation of the water level on the thick colluvial during the monsoon rain falls. Thus, raising the necessity of stabilization technique that can withstand significant axial loads and moderate lateral loads. For the same, joint site visit was conducted with NHAI Authority Engineer and Contractor IL & FS Design Team and Consultants Grusmar and ANP Geo infra team to address the problem Micropiles in assembly with strand anchor and self drilling anchors was proposed to stabilize the portal area
