Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2
Presented By: Jessie Risen, PT, MPT

Learning Objectives At the completion of this classroom lecture and lab experience, the student will be able to: Determine patient selection and application of the assessment tool. Identify where to begin and when to stop testing. Identify performance levels (on the 0-2 scale) while observing movement and demonstration of the gross motor domain activities of the PDMS-2 based on the student’s integration and application of their general knowledge of typical growth and development. Calculate standardized scores, percentile rankings, age equivalents, and gross motor quotients, utilizing the norm-referenced assessment tool of the PDMS-2. Develop SMART goals based on interpretation of PDMS-2 performance results.

History and Development
First edition was developed in 1983 by Rhonda Folio and Rebecca Fewell Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS) was updated in and referred to as the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 (PDMS-2) PDMS-2 is known as the first nationally standardized assessment tool to provide separate gross and fine motor scores for children.
4
Application of the PDMS-2
Estimates a child’s motor competence relative to his or her peers. Can identify delays or disorders in development. Specific skill deficits can be used to develop individualized goals. Can be used to evaluate a child’s progress. Can be utilized as a research tool to assess the nature of motor development in various populations of children.
5
Description of the PDMS-2
Age range=birth to 5years 11months of age Administration time= 45-60minutes Divided into gross and fine motor sections: Reflexes (birth to 11 months) Stationary (all ages) Locomotion (all ages) Object manipulation (12 months and older) Grasping (all ages) Visual Motor integration (all ages)
6
Description of PDMS-2 Subtest results can be used to further calculate composite scores Gross Motor Quotient (GMQ)= reflexes, stationary, locomotion, and object manipulation Fine Motor Quotient (FMQ)= grasping, visual-motor integration Total Motor Quotient (TMQ)= a value that combines both the GMQ and FMQ scores
7
Testing Kit and Materials
Total Cost= $530 Alternative cost =$435 This includes all the materials shown above except for the Peabodyt Motor Activities Program Manual
8
Items You Have to Provide
Rattle Large pull toy (wagon) Soft plush toy Stairs with 7 inch rise Small toy on a string Stop watch 8 inch ball Mat Tennis ball Sturdy object (16-21 inches high)

Administering and Scoring
Where to start? Calculate the child’s chronological age based on date of birth and testing date (adjust for prematurity if necessary). Refer to the examiner record booklet and locate the child’s chronological age in months designated in a blue box in far left column. The item that correlates to this age, becomes the start point.
10
Administering and Scoring
Basal Level: Achieved once the child is able to receive a score of 2 on 3 consecutive test items in a row. Ceiling Level: Achieved once the child scores 0 on 3 consecutive items in a row. Testing ends once the ceiling level is achieved.
11
Administering and Scoring
Each norm is based on a 2, 1, or 0 scoring system with the following criteria: 2 The child is able to master the test item and performs it to the specified criteria 1 Full mastery of the item is not achieved however the child is able to perform in a manner close to the category of mastery of each item 0 The child is unable (cannot) and will not attempt an item, any actual attempt of the item does not show that the skill is emerging

Administering and Scoring
Raw scores and the appendices A-C in the PDMS-II reference guide are utilized to calculate the following standardized scores: Age equivalents Percentiles Standard scores Gross Motor Quotients
