9 Use the race strategy as a group and an individual
Using the RACE strategy, please answer one of the two questions . Answer questions 2 or 3. Each member will get a letter and write their part of RACE in the textbook. Next answer question #4 on your own. If you are still unsure about how to use RACE, then access my blog and listen to the video about the RACE strategy at home. This PowerPoint is on my blog.

10 Today you will learn how to write an informational essay using text evidence from the articles “My Story” and “Hampshire School for Wayward Wizards”. You will build the essay using RACE. Begin by writing your name on a piece of line paper. Andalusian

11 Before writing an essay, you must read the writing prompt first so that you’ll know what
evidence you are looking for. Read page 162 and at the bottom locate the writing prompt. On your paper, write down the writing prompt. Appaloosa

12 Arabian Now that you know what you’re writing about. It’s time to write a thesis statement. A thesis statement is a short statement that summarizes the main idea or claim of an essay. A claim is your opinion on the topic.

13 Belgian It’s time to write a one-sentence introduction. Turn your paper around and restate the writing prompt you found on page Remember to use the “R” in RACE to complete this task.

14 Now that you’ve restated the writing prompt
Now that you’ve restated the writing prompt. Turn and talk with your partner and come up with one major way of how animals helped Temple Grandin deal with the challenges of autism. I will come up with the other way. Buckskin

15 Clydesdale Now that you’ve come up with two answers, it’s time to combine the “R” and the “A”. Take the writing prompt you restated and combine your answer and mine. This will create your thesis statement. See example on next slide.

16 Example: Animals helped Temple Grandin deal with the challenges of autism by dealing with the stress of school life and 2nd reason______. Fill in your reason in the second blank. Congratulations! You just created a thesis statement and the main sentence of your introduction. Now, skip a line on your paper and begin writing your first body paragraph. See next slide for an example. Dutch Draft

17 You will write a 4 paragraph essay
You will write a 4 paragraph essay. Your Thesis statement is the fist paragraph. Then you will write one body paragraph and a conclusion paragraph. I will write the other body paragraph, so that you have an example. Skip lines between each paragraph. See my example on the next slide. Dutch Warmblood

18 Friesian First, a body paragraph needs a topic sentence. A topic sentence lets the reader know what you are going to write about. See next slide.

19 Example: Animals helped Temple Grandin deal with the challenges of autism by helping her to cope the stress of school life. Can you see that I used our writing prompt and one of the reasons to create a topic sentence? Hackney

20 R/A = Animals helped Temple Grandin deal with the challenges of autism by helping her to cope with the stress of school life. C = According to the text, Temple hated school and so to relieve stress she went to the barn and worked with and rode the horses. She says, “Animals kept me going.” E = Clearly, Temple had a passion for horses, which helped her get through school. Now write down this as your first or second body paragraph. You may use this as a model to write your own. Hanoverian

21 Now that you’ve completed your one- sentence introduction, body paragraph 1, and body paragraph 2, it’s time to write a conclusion. See next slide. Lipizzaner

22 The conclusion for an essay is different than one for a single paragraph. Start your ending with “In conclusion,…” You can end your essay in one of 2 ways: Summarize what you wrote OR write an overall theme for what Temple learned about herself and animals. Review the conclusion of each story for ideas. Miniature Horse

23 Mustang Now it’s time to edit.
Have someone read your body paragraph and conclusion. If no one is available, come and see me. If I’m not available, take an extra computer and type it up. See next slide.

24 Now that you are done. Please go back to article “Hampshire School for Wayward Wizards” and answer question 1. Write in your textbook and respond to the question1. Put your name on the front. When you are done, tear both articles out of your book and then put in our class drawer. See next slide for additional activities. Paint
