Rose Bush The rose-bush is found next to the prison “covered in this month of June, with its delicate gems”. As the prisoners walk into the prison the rose-bush “offer their fragrance and fragile beauty”. Hawthorne uses uses the rose-bush to symbolize that even as the prisoners as ready to walk into future, if they look at the rose-bush “Nature could pity and be kind to him.”

The Scarlet Letter The scarlet letter, which is embroidery in Hester's dress, is used to represent "adultery", which is the sinful act she has committed and is being punished for. The letter is used as a reminder to her and those around her of her sin. Hawthorne uses the scarlet letter because it helps to boldly exaggerate Hester's crime and her experiences that arise with it.
