2 Lecture: What Is Psychology?
Why people do the things they do is an age-old question. However, psychology—the science concerned with behavior, in both human and nonhuman animals—first appeared in the 1870s. Despite its youth, it is a broad discipline, essentially spanning subject matter from biology to sociology. Psychologists have doctoral degrees. They study the intersection of two critical relationships: one between brain function and behavior, and another between the environment and behavior. As scientists, psychologists follow scientific methods, using careful observation, experimentation, and analysis. But psychologists also need to be creative in the way they apply scientific findings.

3 Why Study Psychology? Gain a better understanding of why people behave as they do Understand your OWN behavior Psychology will give you new ways to look at and interpret the world and people who inhabit it.

4 Behavior and Mental Processes
Behavior is an OBSERVED action Voluntary or involuntary Mental Processes are cognitive activities Dreams, perceptions, thoughts and memories People’s emotions and feelings affect both of these concepts. Psychological Constructs are used to talk about things that cannot be seen, touched or measured. (such as dreams and thoughts)

Psychologists study behaviors based on genetics; mating, aggression, helping behavior, and communication. Paradox: Behaviors adaptive in ancient times might not be useful in the modern world.
