Audience Analysis: Evaluating accurately and perceptively (what is their impression) of how your audience feels about you and your speech “I don't know the rules of grammar. If you're trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language.”- David Ogilvy 1911-, American Businessman, Advertising Expert
6
What is Persuasive speaking?
Persuasion-Process of changing or reinforcing attitudes, beliefs, values, or behaviors
7
Goal is to Change Audiences’-
Attitude- learned predisposition to respond favorable or unfavorably towards something. Like broccoli, dogs, cats, baseball Beliefs- what you understand to be true or false Ex- Believe in God Value- enduring concept of right or wrong (good vs. bad) In US we value hard-work, sportsmanship
8
Visual Representation of Levels
Think castle w/ walls. ATTITUDES BELIEFS VALUES
9
Pick Topics within- Not within- Abortion Presence of Angels
Capital Punishment God Exists Trump Supporters Promoting hate or racism
10
How do we change people?
11
Positive Motivation- Audience feels they have done something positive or can make a positive change Ex- Use reusable water bottles saves the environment! Ex- I ran 5.25 miles which improves my life. Impress Me.
12
Negative Motivation- Uses Fear Appeal- change behavior by a threat.
Uses if/then Ex. Fines Ex. Death
13
Extrinsic Motivation refers to our tendency to perform activities for known external rewards, whether they be tangible (e.g., money) or psychological (e.g., praise) in nature."
14
Intrinsic Motivation occurs when we act without any obvious external rewards. We simply enjoy an activity or see it as an opportunity to explore, learn, and actualize our potentials."
15
Persuasive Speaking demands you to effectively-
Induce your audience to believe as you do
16
Influence your audience in order to cause some sort of directed action to take place
What Do I
17
Supportive Audience: Audience agrees with you and what you have to say
Therefore, you don’t have to persuade- They agree with you! Friendly Example: Football team giving a talk to the student body during a pep rally. Republicans listening to a fellow Republican give a speech on a topic they agree with A pro-gun speech at a NRA meeting. You discussing the latest gossip with your close friends
18
Uncommitted It’s Neutral No hard set opinions or beliefs
Audience nearly needs information to make up their mind. Easiest group to persuade People with little knowledge on a subject like what long distance shoes the best What candidate?
19
Indifferent Audience is apathetic (uninterested) towards the speaker.
Harder to persuade Audience is captive Appears openly bored Ex. A high school lyceum on a topic you heard ten times before Mandatory meetings Class Parental lectures
20
Opposed Audience Audience members are hostile to topic/you
Feel no warmth for you and is not no way sympathetic to your feelings or cause. Ex. Trump supports are a Bernie rally Sit-ins, demonstrations, Kennedy’s Address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association

So today, let’s first skip to the loo and dump out the harms that the fear of pooping is causing in our society. Number two, we’ll get down to business as we investigate the strains that have caused this phobia to become so common. Finally, we’ll hit the lever of ignorance and flush out some solutions to the deep doo doo we’re in.

The Body- Follows a Problem….. Cause…… Solution……. format.
Problem= What is wrong? How big is it? Who is affected? Why do I care? Cause= What is causing the problem? Are there several causes? These can be switched Solution= What can we do on a National, State, Local Level? What can I do? Need to have an expert that backs your solutions.
26
Topic- Problem Cause Solution
27
Solutions What can I do? When giving a persuasive speech you MUST provide an action the audience can do. Explain how your solutions will work- do you have an expert backing your opinion? Personal Local National

Review- Restate what you have in the preview (Copy and paste and change the tesne of the the words- Ex Today we discussed instead of Today we will discuss

Tie-In: Reference the intro
On our annual family road trip to Utah, I found myself in a very compromising predicament… I had to poop. We drove several miles before coming upon a gas station where my father gave me two options: go here or hold it. The only problem is that going in a gas station means taking that awkward walk of shame to the restroom where everyone knows exactly what you’re doing. I actually tried to avoid pooping because I was scared of what others would think of me! As with most problems in life, I turned to Frozen for sage advice, specifically Elsa’s anthem “Let it go, let it go, can’t hold it back anymore. Let it go, let it go, turn away and slam the door.” This negative attitude towards poo can best be flushed away by talking about it and becoming more educated on the importance of taking the browns to the super bowl. Although using the facilities in a gas station can often be uncomfortable, I had to get over. Poop with pride because it is a sign that your gut is healthy! At some point we must face the facts: everyone poops so just let it go.
