1 Update table of contents Pg. 111 – Water Cleaning System
Standard M&I-1 I can utilize properties of matter to differentiate and identify substances Entry Task Update table of contents Pg. 111 – Water Cleaning System Learning Target How do we separate the substances in a mixture? Homework: Complete first page of Engineering packet

2 Substances here all have boiling points above the boiling point of water
Carmel color Corn syrup Etc.. Substances here all have boiling points at or below boiling point of water Water Flavoring

3 Conductivity of Liquids
No Yes No

4 Water is boiled, the gas is captured and then cooled back to liquid in a separate container
Contaminants do not go out with the boiled water Distilling Takes energy Anything with a lower boiling point will still be in the water Takes the larger contaminants and those with charges out Filters have different sized holes that do not allow unwanted stuff to get through. Filtering Anything that is smaller than the hole gets through

5 Heavier substances fall of the mixture
Sedimentation Heavier substances fall of the mixture Magnetism Substances that are magnetic can be taken out with a magnet Substances hit their boiling point, turn into a gas and are condensed in another location Distillation Less dense substances float Density

6 You must design and build a system that produces pure water.

7 110 111

8 Criteria You need to produce a sample of pure water
Six substances have to be separated from the water and put into individual piles: salt, BB’s, sand, plastic beads, paper and rice –You will have 30 minutes. This is a competition: the group that produces the greatest quantity of clean water in 30 minutes, will win.

9 Rice BB’s Salt (soluble) Sand (insoluble) Plastic Paper
Pure water Rice (organic material) BB’s Salt (soluble) Sand (insoluble) Plastic Paper

10 Criteria Constraints You need to produce a sample of pure water
Six substances have to be separated from the water and put into individual piles: salt, BB’s, sand, plastic beads, paper and rice –You will have 30 minutes. This is a competition: the group that produces the greatest quantity of clean water in 30 minutes, will win. You may only use the materials provided Each substance must be separated using a different process Fingers or spoons cannot be used until the substance has been separated from the others Your design must be ready on May 17th

11 Hot Plate Graduated cylinder Small beaker clamp Beaker stand Magnet Small beaker Filter Spoon Beaker Large Beaker clamp Screen

12 Today Successful groups split the work up.
Separating substances Distilling and collecting water Work on the first page of the packet and begin brainstorming ideas. You will only have tomorrow to practice your systems. Tonight finish first page Write up due Tuesday
