Sept 10 th 2009 Objectives  SWBAT identify the proper method for separating a mixture.  SWBAT design and conduct an experiment to separate substances in a mixture utilizing the physical properties of the components Catalyst  (1) Classify each of the following as element, compound, homogeneous, or heterogeneous mixture. (a) Lucky charms cereal, (b) magnesium chloride, (c) silver, (d) salt water (2) Classify each of the following as a physical or chemical change. (a) Rusting nail, (b) boiling water, (c) smashing a penny

5 FOCUS in on MIXTURES!! Recall: Difference between compound and mixture??

6 Separating Mixtures  Mixtures are physically combined, so they can be PHYSICALLY separated.

7 Real-Life Examples of separating mixtures  Separating components of blood  Separating oil from water in an oil spill  Getting drinkable water in third world countries.

8 How to separate mixtures?  Utilize the differing physical properties of each component.  Physical Properties: Density : will it float or sink in water? Solubility: will it dissolve in water? Magnetism: is it magnetic? Boiling Point : at what temperature does it boil?

9 SEPARATION TECHNIQUES: (1)Filtration: separates a solid from a liquid by filtering out the liquid. Ex. sand and water  What physical property is being utilized here? Utilizes the solubility and density of the solid.

10 (2) Distillation: separates two liquids from each other by boiling off one liquid. Example: water and alcohol mixture.  What physical property is being utilized here? Utilizes the differing boiling points of each.

11 (3) Crystallization: separates a solid dissolved in a liquid by boiling off the liquid. Example: salt water  What physical property is being utilized here? Utilizes boiling point of the liquid.

12 Individual Whiteboard: Identify the technique (filtration, distillation, or crystallization) you would use to separate the following mixtures: (1)Remove rocks from an ocean water sample. (2)A solution of salt water. (3)A mixture of oil and water. (4)Isolate sugar from a sugar-water solution. (5)Salt and ammonium chloride mixture (salt is not soluble in ammonium chloride).

13 Separation Challenge  Problem: You have a mixture of sand, salt, wood chips, and iron fillings. It is your job to successfully separate all of these components.  Possible Materials to use: Magnets Distilled water Funnel Filter paper Hot plate Watch glass Spoon beaker

14 In your groups…  Quietly work out a procedure on a separate sheet of paper.  Once you think you have it, please call me over to approve your procedure. TIPS:  Really think about the physical properties of your components!  Also, the order is VERY IMPORTANT!

15 Safety Cautions:  If you use hotplate, use tongs  If glass breaks, notify me immediately.
