5 Considering John 11 As in John 9, this event has a specific purpose This is the first time a disciple has died It is an important test of discipleship Talking point – why things happen is sometimes mysterious, unknown to us Talking Point – while apostles had the ability to heal, many still died. 7 The Importance of Confession: Romans 10:8-11
Words have Power - Marriage – “I do” - Creation – Psalm 33:4-9 - They expose the heart – Matthew 15:11-20

8 The Importance of Confession: Romans 10:8-11
Confession is the ultimate power word(s) - Put out of the synagogue (John 9) - Confessions of Pharisees – Acts 23:8 Ac 23:6 ¶ But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, "Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!“ 7 And when he had said this, a dissension arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees; and the assembly was divided. 8 For Sadducees say that there is no resurrection--and no angel or spirit; but the Pharisees confess both.

9 The Importance of Confession: Romans 10:8-11
Confession means taking sides - Elijah rebuked Israel – 1 Kings 18:21 1 Kings 18:21: And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. 1 Kings 18:39: And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.”

10 The Importance of Confession: Romans 10:8-11
The good confession – 1 Timothy 6:12 - Identity of Jesus – Hebrews 3:1 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. Heb 3:1 ¶ Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus,

11 The Importance of Confession: Romans 10:8-11
The good confession – 1 Timothy 6:12 - Identity of Jesus – Hebrews 3:1 - Our hope – Hebrews 4:14, 10:23 Hebrews 4:14: Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Hebrews 10:23: Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

12 Martha’s Confession Martha was holding fast her confession She was using it for comfort She failed to see that Jesus WAS Resurrection Martha was being tested to her belief – it resulted in a confession Jesus was the Christ, and that those gone would return She was likely NOT asking Jesus to raise her brother now (vs. 39)

14 Making the Good Confession
Acts 8:36-37 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." The Good Confession can only come: After hearing the Word After believing the Word

15 Making the Good Confession
The Good Confession must be followed: By (a commitment to) repentance By baptism in water By faithfulness Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.
