1 1.02 Creative Design Solutions: Design Thinking
Please add to these notes as we go along

2 How do we Create and Innovate?
To turn _________ ideas into reality Make ___________ and problem solve What do you do when you are told to create a project for school…what processes do you undertake to produce a good quality product?___________________________________ ___________________________________________ __________________________________________

3 So back to that school project…”How could you have been
___________________ According to Webster, to innovate means to do something in a ___________ way or develop new methods and thinking of the way something is accomplished. So back to that school project…”How could you have been Innovative in your approach to the product you were creating?”_________________________________________ _________________________________________________

4 Take a moment and think of a product….
Take it further and express it Innovatively Express it creatively ?

5 Why is it important to push ourselves to think INNOVATIVELY

6 DESIGN THINKING ___________________________ used by designers to solve complex problems, and find desirable _________________________ for clients.

7 The process of DESIGN THINKING
EMPATHIZE DEFINE IDEATE PROTOTYPE TEST

8 _____________________ “To create meaningful innovations, you need to know your users and care about their lives.” Empathy is: the ________________ of a human-centered design process. the work you do to understand _____________ within the context of your design challenge. an activity that allows you to uncover the _________________ that needs to be addressed by watching, listening and discovering insights that give YOU the direction to create innovative solutions. a process of OBSERVING, ENGAGING , WATCHING and LISTENING.

9 In your own words, write what you think Empathy is and its goal in Design Thinking_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

10 ___________________ “Framing the right problem is the only way to create the right solution.”
The define mode is: all about bringing _______________ and focus into the design discussion. making sense of the widespread information you gathered in the __________________________ mode. narrowing down the focused problem to create a meaningful and __________________________ problem statement (also known as point of view). a time when you ____________________ scattered findings into powerful insights.

11 How does the DEFINE mode facilitate the crafting of an accurate problem statement or point of view?____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

12 __________________ “It’s not about coming up with the ‘right’ idea but about generating the broadest range of possibilities” Ideation is: the process of coming up with a number of broad __________. transitioning from identifying ______________ to crafting solutions. about pushing for the widest possible range of ideas from which you can explore a ‘best’ solution later through ________________________. stepping beyond obvious solutions to increase the possibility of innovative _______________________________. brain-storming, mind-mapping and sketching to interact with your ideas. the skill of deferring ________________________; separating the generation of ideas from the evaluation of ideas.

13 Problem to IDEATE: There is insufficient student parking at your school. As you brainstorm with a partner or group, come up with possible solutions that address this issue. DO NOT evaluate a final solution yet! Take 15 minutes to complete this activity.

14 PROTOTYPE “Build to think and test to learn” “Craft artifacts to get you closer to your final solution” The Prototype mode is: intended to answer ____________________________ that you closer to a final solution based on user feedback. a way to start a conversation, to fail quickly and cheaply, to test possibilities and to manage the solution-building process by breaking down a larger problem into smaller, testable ___________________________. facilitated by producing multiple artifacts that can be used as visuals to get feedback and further narrow down ________________________. not a time to invest a lot of physical and time resources on a single __________________________. Churn out as much as you can as quickly as possible. They don’t need to be ‘beautiful’, they simply need to illustrate your concepts from the Ideate phase.

15 It’s time to create prototypes of the solutions you created in the ideation phase for the student parking dilemma. Remember, these can take the form of models, sketches or any other type of artifact that adequately conveys your concepts. Take 20 Minutes to complete this activity

16 TEST “Testing is an opportunity to learn about your solution and your user.” “Show, don’t tell…”
The Test mode: is when you solicit feedback about the __________________________ you created. Continue to ask “why” and focus on what you can learn about the person and the problem as well as your potential solutions. may include the user testing a _________________ object or taking on a role or task when approaching your prototype if a real life scenario is not possible. informs the next iterations of prototypes. The feedback provides additional details as to what was successful and what was not. allows you to bring multiple prototypes to the user for comparisons that may reveal additional and better __________________________. Sometimes you have to return to the drawing board!

17 It’s time for you to test and get feedback on the prototype artifacts you created. What worked and what didn’t? Take 15 minutes to complete this activity

18 Iteration (change/ refinement) is a fundamental of good design
Iteration (change/ refinement) is a fundamental of good design. “What refinements can you make on that student parking dilemma based on the feedback from the testing phase?” “Do you have a great solution you can present?”

19 Assignment: 1. What are the steps followed in Design Thinking
Assignment: 1. What are the steps followed in Design Thinking?_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. In your own words, describe each one and their importance in developing successful design solutions.
