Climate Change Design Challenge Global Science 2013

Designing Solutions to Reduce the Impacts of Climate Change

Introduction

Health care Education Natural Disasters Environment Water War Homelessness The world is full of BIG problems...

Design thinkers solve BIG PROBLEMS.

You are going to practice the DESIGN THINKING PROCESS so you can begin to solve some of the World’s big problems.

The way you learn the design thinking process is by diving into a DESIGN CHALLENGE. Your DESIGN CHALLENGE is... Design a strategy to reduce the impacts of Climate change

Step 1: Empathy Build empathy for your user.

In this activity, you will try to design a strategy to decrease the impacts of climate change. Your strategy MAY be a design for just one person (your user) or it may be for many people. It might be Personal Local National International

You have already learned about the problem, in this case, climate change. Now we will work to develop empathy for our user:

To solve your design challenge, Designing solutions to reduce the impacts of climate change you need to learn about the problem by observation.

WHY???

TO BUILD EMPATHY FOR YOUR USER.

Your goal is to develop empathy for your user, which means putting yourself in their shoes.

What is Empathy?

In this case, Empathy is NOT ~feeling sorry for someone ~being compassionate

Empathy means...

looking closely....

and listening closely.

Empathy is feeling what someone else feels...

and asking questions about what you THINK you see.

HOW do you develop EMPATHY?

You have to become a GREAT observer and listener!

Build empathy for your user based on the video clips. What kind of problems are they facing? How do these problems make them feel? Say FeelDo Think

As you watch the videos, take brief notes on your graphic organizer. My Notes (3 main ideas) My questions (At least 1 per clip) Clip #1 Clip #2 Clip #3

Clip #1:

Clip #2

Clip #3

Step 2: Define Define the problem your user is facing.

Create a Point of View Statement. Define the problem(s) facing your user(s):

__________needs a way to ___________ (User name) (Verb) because __________________________. (Surprising Insight) Point of View Statement

Step 3: Ideate Brainstorm as many ideas as you can!

BRAINSTORMING MINDSETS Listen carefully. This is how you will brainstorm with your group. Wait to begin Until I say “GO.” You will learn all about how to brainstorm ideas and create a prototype BEFORE you begin working in your groups.

Go for quantity (create a LOT of ideas!

Listen to others: only 1 person talks at a time!

Keep your idea short- it has to fit on a sticky note! Source: http://wwwcdn.net/ev/assets/images/vectors/afbig/blank-sticky-note-clip-art.jpg

Capture EVERY SINGLE IDEA on a sticky note!

For this design challenge We are working with wide parameters for this design challenge. Your design does NOT have to be a product or an object (but it could) Your design could be a strategy or an action. It could be personal, local, national, or international. (Examples?)

1.Say your idea. (How could we decrease the impacts of climate change?) 2. Write your idea on a post it note. 3. Stick it on a wall. BRAINSTORMING….

Source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fresh_squash/5595161871/sizes/z/in/photostream/ Idea Clustering Listen carefully. This is how you will cluster your ideas and Choose one as a group. Wait to begin until I say “GO.”

Rearrange your sticky notes into themes.

Idea Selection Place a check mark next to your 3 favorite ideas.

As a team, choose your favorite idea to move forward to prototyping.

Step 4: Prototype Create a prototype of your design.

... is NOT a model.... does not have to LOOK of BE perfect. A PROTOTYPE

PROTOTYPES For this design challenge IF your design is not a product or an object.. Your PROTOTYPE will be a drawing showing your strategy or solution. (For example, you might draw “before” and “after” pictures.)

Step 5: Feedback Get feedback from your user about your design.

What worked? What could be improved? What would you do next? What didn’t? Capture User Feedback This is how you will evaluate your prototype!

CONGRATULATIONS! You are ready to begin brainstorming your strategies for decreasing the effects of climate change! You will need your task cards now.
