1 Differences in male/female skeleton
Female skull is smaller, lighter, and has less obvious muscular attachments Female coxal bones are lighter, thinner, and have less obvious muscular attachments Female pelvic cavity is wider in all diameters, is shorter, roomier, and less funnel-shaped Female sacrum is wider with sacral curvature more sharply bent and coccyx is more movable

2 JOINTS Fibrous joints—between bones that closely contact one another
Cartilaginous joints—disks of cartilage connect the bones Synovial joints—ends of bones covered with hyaline cartilage, have flattened shock-absorbing menisci and usually have fluid filled sacs called bursae which aid in the movement of tendons as they pass over bony parts

3 Types of synovial joints
Ball and socket—movement in all planes Shoulder or hip Condyloid—many types of movement but NO rotation Joints between metacarpals and phalanges Gliding—sliding and twisting Ankle, wrist Hinge—flexion and extension Elbow, knee, phalanges Pivot—rotation around a central axis Joint between proximal ends of radius and ulna Saddle—variety of movements Between carpal and metacarpal of thumb
