1 For the week of January 28-Feb.1, 2013
Kindergarten Newsletter Mrs. Leland’s Class For the week of January 28-Feb.1, 2013 Language Arts Focus: This week, we will introduce the /ch/ and /j/ sounds (fat pushed air sounds). We will spend a lot of time distinguishing between the /sh/ and /ch/ sounds. During stations this week we will practice identifying the sounds in words and reading words that contain the sounds we have learned so far this year. We have been spending a lot of time reading words with consonant blends (examples: bl, fl, sn, dr). We will also read books to help practice our popcorn words. Please make sure to practice reading each night. The more they read a book, the more fluent they become in their reading. Thanks!  This week the children will learn about Antarctica, penguins (and other polar animals), snow and ice. They will also be making their own fact books about Antarctica. By the end of the week, your child should be able to answer questions such as, what animals live there, what the weather is like, and if any people live there. We will also make penguins and write facts about them. Did you know that penguins are the only birds that cannot fly? I know the children will love learning about these amazing animals. Review “Popcorn Words” one, two, three, four, five Math Focus: This week in math we will continue to practice showing how to make the teen numbers. This is an important skill to help the children learn how many 10s and 1s are in a given number. We will also continue to practice addition by solving story problems and rolling dice. You can help at home be using your own objects to make addition story problems. For example, “I have 2 forks on the table. I put 2 more on the table. How many forks are on the table now?” You can also have the children tell you how many tens and ones are in a given number. For some added difficulty, give them the number of 10s and 1s and see if they can figure out the number. Make sure to keep using the 100s number chart for added practice!
