1 Endangered and Extinction

2 What does endangered and extinction mean?
Endangered- Species that are in serious danger of extinction and have already been reduced to low numbers in their populations Extinction- Species that no longer exist

3 Basis Needs What are basic needs? What are your basic needs as a student? Humans are just like animals we rely on our basic needs to survive, food, shelter, warmth, etc. When the needs are not met animals suffer the consequences

4 Examples of Endangered
The South China Tiger In 1950s the population of South China Tigers were 4,000 Do to loss of habitat, lack of needs being met Population is left in the world

5 Example of Extinct Animals
The West African Black Rhino Due to being hunted by humans for their horns, loss of habitat Species is presumed to be extinct

6 Little activity I will show you ten animals your job is to think about if they are endangered or extinct If you think the animal is endangered raise one finger, if you think it is extinct raise two fingers Ready to begin?

7 Endangered or Extinct The Tasmanian Tiger Correct answer: Extinct

8 Endangered or Extinct? The African Wild Dog Correct answer: Endangered

9 Endangered or Extinct? The Blue Whale Correct answer: Endangered

10 Endangered or Extinct The Megalodon Shark Correct answer: Extinct

11 Endangered or Extinct? The Indian Elephant Correct answer: Endangered

12 Human impacts Today humans play a positive and negative role in endangered animals

13 Humans positives Humans can help animals!
By funding organizations to help protect animals, make laws that protect animals from hunting etc. Breeding animals that are endangered to help support their populations Protecting animals habitat

14 Positives continued Humans also help care for animals when they are sick/cannot survive in the wild any longer

15 Negatives for animals Humans are one of the main causes for animals to be endangered or extinct Here are a few examples

16 Humans cause pollution

17 Hunting animals

18 Destruction to habitat

19 Invasive Species An invasive species is an organism that is introduced into an ecosystem where it didn't originally evolve They tend to flourish as there is little threat in the area (predators)

20 What can they do to the environment?
When Invasive Species are introduced to a new habitat they can hurt the ecosystem in that area Any ideas how?

21 Examples of Invasive Species
After five years the population of the rabbit due to a lack of food After ten years rabbits are rare in the area, due to the invasive species taking over.

22 What it looks like

23 Examples of Invasive Species The American Bullfrog

24 East Gray Squirrel

25 Invasive Species They are especially destructive of island ecosystems
Invasive Species can contribute to endangered and extinct animals
