2 Another way to remember irregulars:
VEN DI-SAL HAZ TEN VE-PON-SE (Ven Disal has ten weapons)

3 Direct Object Pronouns
A direct object is a person or thing that receives the direct action of the verb. Óscar kisses his wife. Óscar besa a su esposa. I eat the tamales. Yo como los tamales.

4 A direct object answers what or whom:
Identifying a DO A direct object answers what or whom: SUBJECT + VERB + WHAT / WHOM DIRECT OBJECT Yo como los tamales. Óscar besa a su esposa.

5 Pronouns-little words that take the place of the object, so that the object does not have to be repeated over and over. Did you buy the piano ? Yes, I bought the piano . Did you pay a lot for the piano ? Well, the piano wasn’t cheap. Can you play the piano ? Yes, and my brother plays the piano too.

6 Notice how many times “the piano” was repeated???

7 A better, more concise way is to use pronouns instead of repeating the noun over and over.
Did you buy the piano ? Yes, I bought it . Did you pay a lot for ? it Well, wasn’t cheap. it Can you play ? it Yes, and my brother plays too. it

8 Direct object pronouns in Spanish, just as in English, take the place of the direct object itself, so that the direct object does not have to be repeated, and repeated, and repeated . . . ¿Compraste el piano ? Sí, lo compré. ¿Puedes tocar ? lo Sí, y mi hermano sabe tocar también. lo

9 Here are the DO pronouns:
These are used exclusively for people me nos te os lo, la los, las him, it These are used for people and things her, it them ***These are almost all the same as DEFINITE ARTICLES (el, la, los, las), which all mean “the.” The only one different is the singular masculine “lo.” Don’t get “el” and “lo” mixed up.

10 Here is how pronouns replace things or people that are direct objects.
I eat the tamales. Yo como los tamales. Yo los como. Óscar kisses his wife. Óscar besa a su esposa. Óscar la besa.

11 Where do DO pronouns go? Placed before the conjugated verb
I drink it. (water-el agua)-->Yo lo bebo. If your sentence has a conjugated verb AND an infinitive verb, the pronoun can go before the conjugated verb or attached to the end of the infinitive. I want to drink it.-->Yo lo quiero beber. Yo quiero beberlo.

12 DO pronouns are commonly used in conversation when the object is established or known. Again, this avoids needless repetition. ¿Dónde ves a Jorge y a Sarita? Where do you see Jorge and Sarita? Los veo en clase. I see them in class. ¿Visitas a tu abuela con frecuencia? Do you visit your grandmother often? Sí, la visito mucho. Yes, I visit her a lot. Do not be misled into thinking that los and la in the above answers are the subjects of the sentences just because they appear in subject position. The subject of both answers, which is of course yo, is simply not expressed in these instances.

13 (Adolfo is not going to call her.)
In negative sentences, the DO pronoun is placed between no and the conjugated verb OR it can be attached to the end of the infinitive. Adolfo no la va a llamar. Adolfo no va a llamarla. (Adolfo is not going to call her.)

14 Direct object gets replaced with a direct object pronoun.
LOS LO LA LAS Srta Geroux 2010

15 Mira la pelicula. Mira LA La mira.. Srta Geroux 2010

16 Yo hago la tarea Escribes las cartas Cocinan el tocino.
Sacan los sandwiches. Yo la hago. Las escribes. Lo cocinan Los sacan Srta Geroux 2010

17 Informal Commands with Pronouns
Positive informal commands: if it is one syllable, attach it to the end Ponlo (put it)-->doesn’t get an accent because “pon” is one syllable if it is more than one syllable, add an accent to the second to last vowel Mézclalo (mix it)-->accent goes on the second to last vowel Negative informal commands: place it between no and the verb No lo bebas (don’t drink it)
