2 Definitions Ecology = The study of interactions between organisms and their environment

3 Definitions Ecology = The study of interactions between organisms and their environment Environment = An organism’s surroundings, including living and non-living factors

4 Definitions Ecology = The study of interactions between organisms and their environment Environment = An organism’s surroundings, including living and non-living factors Habitat = The area inhabited by a particular species

5 Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Biotic factors = All the living organisms that are part of an environment

6 Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Biotic factors = All the living organisms that are part of an environment Abiotic factors = Non-living chemical and physical factors in the environment (for example: temperature, light, water, and nutrients)

7 Output activity (pg 5) Make 2 columns, labeled “biotic” and “abiotic”
List at least 5 biotic and 5 abiotic factors that affect you daily

8 Limiting factors (pg 4) Limiting factor = The biotic or abiotic factor that limits the survival and productivity of an organism

9 Example: Limiting factors for plants
Limiting factor = The biotic or abiotic factor that limits the survival and productivity of an organism Example: Limiting factors for plants In the desert = Water In the rainforest = Light or herbivores
