1 Chapter 8 Photosynthesis

2 Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs
8-1 Energy & Life Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs Autotrophs – Organism which make their own food. 2 types of Autotrophs Photosynthetic: Convert light energy into food energy Ex. – Green plants Chemosynthetic: Convert Chemicals (SO2 & CH4) into food energy Ex. – Chemosynthetic Bacteria

3 Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs
8-1 Energy & Life Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs Heterotrophs – Obtain energy from the foods they consume Must eat autotrophs or something that has eaten an autotroph

4 8-1 Energy & Life Chemical Energy & ATP ATP – Adenosine Triphosphate
Basic energy molecule for all cells Composed of Adenine, Ribose, & 3 Phosphate groups ADP – Adenosine Diphosphate Same composition as ATP but with 2 Phosphate groups

5 ATP Section 8-1 Adenine Ribose 3 Phosphate groups Go to Section:

6 Figure 8-3 Comparison of ADP and ATP to a Battery
Section 8-1 ADP ATP Energy Energy Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) + Phosphate Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) Partially charged battery Fully charged battery Go to Section:

7 ATP

8 8-1 Energy & Life ATP & Glucose
Cells only have a few second supply of ATP Cells can regenerate ATP from ADP as needed by using energy in glucose Glucose contains 90 times the chemical energy of a molecule of ATP
