1 Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

2 Objectives Energy– 1. Describe how energy flows through living systems
2. Describe the ATP-ADP cycle

3 Photosynthesis— 1. Explain why photosynthesis and cellular respiration form a continuous cycle 2. Summarize the overall process of photosynthesis. 3. Describe what happens during the light reactions and the Calvin cycle and how they are connected. 4. Explain how oxygen gas is produced.

4 Cellular Respiration—
1. Summarize the overall process of cellular respiration. 2. Identify the major reactants and products of cellular respiration

5 How are Autotrophs and Heterotrophs connected?
Photosynthesis (Autotrophs) CO2 & ATP Glucose & O2 Cellular Respiration (Heterotrophs & Autotrophs)

6 Where Does Energy Come From?
When food molecules (glucose) is broken down, ATP can be made ATP- ADP cycle Adenosine triphospate, (ATP) is made of adenine, ribose and 3 phosphate groups. Adenosine diphosphate, (ADP) is made of adenine, ribose and 2 phosphate groups.

7 Adenine 3 Phosphate groups Ribose

8 Energy is stored in the bonds that hold the phosphates together.
When the third phosphate is removed from ATP, the bond is broken and energy is released. ADP ATP Energy Energy Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) + Phosphate Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) Partially charged battery Fully charged battery

9 How Energy Cycles Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration
Reactants (What is Needed): Carbon dioxide, Water, Sunlight (energy) Products (What is made): Oxygen, Glucose Cellular Respiration Reactants (What is Needed): Glucose, Oxygen Products (What is made): Carbon dioxide, Water, ATP (energy)
