1 Forming Intimate Relationships

2 Should I marry, whom should I marry, and whom do I want to marry?
Many Canadians worry about whether they will be able to form a satisfying relationship that will last a lifetime, without having to give up who they are and who they want to be.

3 What’s the scoop on worldwide marriages?
Sociologists estimate that only 10% of worldwide marriages are truly monogamous. Polygamous marriages are considered more desirable around the world, if they can be afforded. In the western world, serial monogamy (marriage to several spouses one after another) is a logical result of divorce.

4 Attraction, Mate Selection and Romance
Free-choice mate selection Here’s what evolutionary psychologists say: Many Canadians choose whom they are attracted to, fall in love, and make the decision to marry. In 87% of all cultures, relationships between men and women exhibit romantic love. Summarize your points about the above theory of attraction from page 192. Based on the idea of natural selection, whom do women tend to feel attracted to, and whom do men tend to feel attracted to?

5 Other theories of attraction:
The functionalist perspective: The symbolic interactionist perspective: Find your results from page 193. Don’t forget to define social homogamy The ideal mate theory: (page )

6 Oh there’s more! Read part of page 194 for this point.
The social exchange perspective: The developmental perspective: Read part of page 194 for this point. Page 195. Also discuss why women tend to marry at a younger age, and men at an older age.
