2 Appositives… …are nouns or pronouns—often with modifiers— set beside another noun or pronoun to explain or identify it NOTES: Appositive phrases usually follow the words they explain or identify, but may also precede it When information is essential to the meaning of the sentence, do not place commas around the appositive If the sentence can stand on its own without the appositive, place a comma before and after the appositive

3 Examples of Appositives:
Your friend Bill is in trouble. The chief surgeon, an expert in transplant procedures, is my uncle. A beautiful collie, Skip was my favorite dog.
