Compound-Complex Sentences

What we already know... Simple Sentences:
Contain at least one (1) subject and (1) predicate. Are independent clauses; they are complete thoughts. Can be arranged in 4 patterns: SV/SVV/SSV/SSVV

Contain two (2) independent clauses Independent clauses are held together by: Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS) Conjunctive Adverbs (Show Relationships) Compound Sentences Coordinating Conjunction (c) = comma Conjunctive Adverb (ca) = semicolon AND comma Can be made into 3 patterns: I ; I I , c I I ; ca, I

What we already know... Complex Sentences
Contain 1 independent clause and 1 or more dependent clauses Dependent clauses start with a subordinating conjunction.; it is the word that BEGINS the dependent clause. If the sentence starts with a dependent clause, it will use a comma. Complex Sentences can be made into 2 patterns: ID - I want to play outside even though it is still winter. D, I - Even though it is still winter, I want to play outside.

SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
Remember! Subordinating conjunctions are the words that START the dependent clause. Here are some of the most common subordinating conjunctions: AFTER ALTHOUGH AS AS IF AS LONG AS AS SOON AS AS THOUGH BECAUSE BEFORE EVEN IF EVEN THOUGH IF IN ORDER THAT JUST AS LIKE ONCE PROVIDED RATHER THAN SINCE SO THAT THAN THOUGH UNLESS UNTIL WHEN WHENEVER WHILE SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

Compound sentence + Complex sentence = Compound-Complex
Compound-Complex Sentences Compound sentence + Complex sentence = Compound-Complex Contain at least 1 dependent clause Compound-Complex sentences will contain: Coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS) or semicolons Subordinating conjunctions (words that start a dependent clause)

Compound-Complex Sentences Compound-complex sentences are all about the location of the dependent clause. Ask yourself, Does the dependent clause come 1st, 2nd, or 3rd?
