2 Important dates Illinois was discovered in 1673 by the French
Illinois became a territory in 1809 Illinois became a state on December 3, 1818 Illinois first constitution was written in the summer of 1818 Illinois second constitution was written in 1862 Illinois third constitution was written in 1920 Illinois fourth (and current) constitution was written on December 15, 1970

3 Who founded Illinois? First governor: Ninian Edwards President at the time: James Monroe Why? It had good geographical locations such as rivers and Lake Michigan

Chippewa Delaware Fox Illinois Iowa Iroquois Kaskaskia Kickapoo Michigamea Miami Moingwena Ottawa Peoria Piankashaw Potawatomi Sauk and Fox Shawnee Winnebago Wyandot

6 What happened to them? In the mid-1800s American Government (specifically Andrew Jackson) ordered Native Americans to be out on reservations Although there are still Native Americans in Illinois, there are no federally recognized tribes.

7 African Americans Illinois was originally a slave state
Became part of the Union during the civil War Illinois repealed Black Codes after the Civil War Race Riots early 1900s Emmett Till was from Chicago Murdered because other states weren’t as integrated Illinois is still extremely segregated Chicago is a prime example Evanston Peoria

8 This map of Chicago shows how people still live primarily with their race in their neighborhood. This leads to schools being segregated as well because many school districts are based by what neighborhood you live in.
