1 Journal Do you think memories are important, or not important? Explain why. Provide at least three details or examples to support your argument.

2 This day in history… 1) Work with a partner.
2) Read the list of events from this day in history. 3) Discuss and determine whether each is positive or negative. Put a + next to those that are positive memories and a – next to those that are negative memories. 4) Determine the four most important events from history today that we need to remember forever. For each one explain why you think it’s significant to keep in history. You have 10 minutes to complete this task. You will turn in your list and explanations.

3 Quick write Respond to each question and make sure you provide details. Do you believe you need to know about the past in order to be wise? Do you think knowing the past can be valuable in shaping the future?

4 “the giver” foldable Fold a piece of paper into four squares. Headers:
Top Left: Positive Memories Received (List 5) Top Right: Negative Memories Received (List 5) Bottom Left: Sensory Details/Imagery in the Film (List 10) Bottom Right: What Jonas learns from the Memories (List and explain 3)

5 Journal Think back to the idea of memories that are important versus those that are not. What are three memories from history that you think we should remember forever? What are three memories from history that you think we should not remember? Remember to justify each response!

6 Reflection Do this on the back of your four square. Keeping in mind our discussions from the past two days and “The Giver,” write a reflection on what you learned about the importance of memory, history, and memoirs. In one paragraph, talk about the importance of memory/memoir for a culture or large group. In the second paragraph, discuss why memory/memoir matters for individuals or families. In the third paragraph, discuss the memories from your life that you think are important to remember. Which ones did you include in your memoir project, and why? Make sure you turn in your completed four square and reflection!
