1 The Nature of Force

2 Force-Push or Pull

3 Magnitude and Direction
Forces are described by strength and direction

4 Unbalanced Forces Result in change of motion-acceleration

5 Balanced Forces Will not change object’s motion.

6 Newton’s First Law of Motion
An object in motion will stay in motion and object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by a force. Also called the law of inertia.

7 Inertia Tendency for an object to resist a change in motion.
Directly related to an object’s mass. The more mass the more inertia.

8 Force = Mass x Acceleration
Kilograms x m/s/s = Newtons

9 Friction Strength of force depends on: Type of surface
How hard the surface pushes together.

10 Uses of Friction Walking Driving Lighting match

11 Three types of Friction
Sliding Friction Rolling Friction Fluid Friction

12 Gravity Force that pulls objects to Earth.
When it’s the only force it is called free fall

13 Gravitational Acceleration
9.8 m/s/s is constant gravity acceleration for all objects. Final velocity is 9.8 m/s/s x time falling. (no air resistance)

14 Air Resistance Objects falling through air experience fluid friction called air resistance. Air Resistance increases with velocity. When velocity reaches maximum it is called terminal velocity.
