Heredity : Includes all traits passed down from one generation to the next.
A person is born with certain inherited traits passed down from one generation to the next.
These traits affect almost every aspect of a person’s appearance:
Eye color
Hair color
Skin color
Height, bone structure, and facial features are also a part of heredity.

3. Effects of Heredity vs. Environment
Environment : Consists of everything in a person’s surroundings.
Includes family, friends, as well as home, community and life experiences.
Hereditary is potentially influenced by the environment.
Hair color is inherited, however can be changed by exposure to the sun, or beauty treatments, both of which are parts of environment.

4. The influence of the family
The family is the primary nurturing unit!
It is within families that children first receive love and attention.
Children need structure in their lives to help them develop a sense of order and purpose.
Children need consequences for behavior.
Need to learn their behavior affects people other than themselves.

5. The Influence of the marital relationship
The husband and wife relationships should be the primary relationship in the family.
Strong marital relationship = better parents.
Good marriage = solid foundation to build strong parent-child relationships.
Children can sense a weak marital relationship.
Children may worry and think things are their fault.

Explain how flower pots and families are similar.
Put flower pot inside bag and seal up
Break flower pot
Write on each broken piece a problem that might break a family apart
Try to put pot back together
Write on tape what is required to mend a broken family

7. Characteristics of strong families
Support and appreciate one another.
Spend time together.
Communicate with one another.
Manage resources and share responsibilities.
Share moral standards.
Compassion, respect, honesty, equality, and responsibility.
Share a common sense of what is right and wrong.
Share family rituals and traditions.

8. Assignment Time Gene –o - Gram Activity
First you will brainstorm your personal character traits.
Second you will need to decide from whom did you get these traits from.
Third you will be creating a gene-o-gram map to visually map out your characteristics.
