Ricky Craven And Kurt Busch Darlington Race

Shoulder Partner…. Turn and talk to your partner. The partner closest to the door ask, “How do you win a race?”. The partner closest to the window should answer! Then switch.

In a race… The same amount of distance around a track is covered.
How do you win? You need to cover the same amount of distance as everyone else, in the shortest amount of time! The goal by the end of the day, can you identify the person or object who covers the most distance in the shortest amount of time!

AIM: Scientists will be able to calculate the velocity of cars, animals, and all sorts of moving things and read a graph to determine the fastest participant!

Who’s faster MAN or BEAST?
BY4

Calculating velocity lets us compare how things move, plan trips, and predict how things will travel. Let’s learn how to calculate speed.

What is the fastest animal in the world?
Whiteboard practice

5th place The Quarter horse, although very big, comes in 5th place. In 3 seconds, the quarter horse ran distance of 57 meters north. What is its velocity? 19 m/s NORTH

4th place: The Lion ran 105 meters west in 5 seconds. What is the velocity of a lion? 21 m/s west

3rd place: The wildebeest comes in 3rd place. He ran distance of 660 meters east in 30 seconds. What is the velocity of the wildebeest? 22 m/s east

2nd place: An antelope is an extremely fast animal… It takes an antelope 10 seconds to run 260 meters. 26 m/s Why is this not a velocity?

1st place: A cheetah ran 145 meters south in 5 seconds. What was its velocity? 29 m/s South

Time for independent practice

Distance vs. Time Graphs

Graphing Motion Shows motion of an object Distance on y-axis
Time on x-axis Slope = steepness of a line Steeper slope = greater speed

Calculating Speed Slope = rise/run

1) What is the speed of the vehicle?

2) How far has the vehicle travelled after 1 second?

1) Which car is travelling the slowest?

2) How far has car #2 travelled in 2 hours?

3) What is the speed of car #2?
