1 This is a thermal image. What observations can you make of this house?
Energy Resources This is a thermal image. What observations can you make of this house?

2 Sources of Energy Most energy in the U.S. comes from nonrenewable resources These are resources that are used faster than they can be replaced by natural processes

3 Sources of Energy Renewable resources can be replaced by natural processes in a relatively short amount of time.

4 Renewable or NOT! The Game
1) The gas you put in your car….

5 Renewable or NOT! The Game
2) Solar power from solar panels on your roof

6 Renewable or NOT! The Game
3) Using the heat from Earth’s core to power your home.

7 Renewable or NOT! The Game
4) The nuclear plant in Cleveland brings power to thousands of households

8 Fossil Fuels Form over millions of years. Plant/animal dies
Over time covered by sediment Pressure and time produce fossil fuel

9 Fossil Fuels Dependent on 3 factors The type of organic matter
The temperature and pressure The length of time that the organic matter was buried

10 Coal Bacteria, extreme temperatures, and pressure acted on the plant remains over time. -> forms peat -> peat hardens into coal

11 Oil & Natural Gas Scientists theorize that oil and natural gas formed from the remains of microscopic marine organisms called plankton!

12 How Oil & Natural Gas Form
1) The plankton died and fell to the ocean floor. 2) Sediment buried their remains and bacteria decomposed the organic matter 3) During the process thick liquid oil formed first 4) If the temperature and pressure were great enough, natural gas formed

13 Oil & Natural Gas

14 Advantages of Fossil Fuels
Inexpensive Easy to transport Converting chemical to electricity is fairly easy

15 Disadvantages of Fossil Fuels
Limited Supply Nonrenewable WILL run out Habitat Disruption Obtaining fuels disrupts natural habitats Forests, coastlines, mountains Pollution Runoff from coal mines, fracking chemicals, etc. Burning fuels

16 The Fossil Fuel Cycle
