1 Thermal Energy and Work
Steam Engines

2 First Internal Combustion Engine
How did we get here?

3 Steam Engines Steam engine – any machine that generates steam and converts the steam pressure into mechanical motion 1600’s in England, wood and charcoal were scarce, therefore people needed an alternative source of fuel History Channel - Video

4 Savery’s Steam Engine Built to help pump water out of the mines (replaced horses who were used to carry buckets of water from the deep coal mines) Patented in 1698,

5 Savery Engine Fire boils the water in the boiler
Opens the valves at point E, so steam fills vessel Steam in vessel condenses and creates a vacuum. Pressure is now less in the vessell than in the atmosphere, so it pushes water into the last vessell Close valves and steam pushes water from top of pipe

6 Drawbacks Inefficient and costly to operate
Inventors continued to search for new/improved engines designs

7 Newcomen’s Atmospheric Engine
Atmosphere plays important role again Again used to pump water out of mines Read Page 143 and fill in the information on your page.

8 Watts Steam Engine Page

9 Steam Turbine Engine Page 146-147

10 Internal Combustion Engine
Watch the video on your sheet
