4. What led to America’s status as world super power?
Prior to WWI, America wanted to keep to practice isolationism
Isolationism is the idea that we wanted to leave everyone alone and only worry about America
This idea of was shattered whenever we went to war with Spain in the Spanish- American War
The US fought the Spanish because of their colonization and treatment of Cuban citizens
Cuba is 90 miles from Florida so we felt we needed to protect them
President William McKinley allowed the US to go to war

5. Spanish American war
Not everyone agreed with going to war, but most agreed as a larger country we needed to protect those around us
The Spanish-American War was the 1st international conflict we fought in
The US decimated Spain because:
We used steam engine ships made out of steel and more modern guns
Spain was still using wooden ships and sails

6. US Adds Territory
People already had a bad taste in their mouths because of imperialism
The Spanish-American War was in 1898
Americans saw what was happening to India, Africa, and East Asia and did not want to do that to other nations
Because of the Treaty of Paris, America gained the territories of:
Guam
Puerto Rico
The Philippines
Cuba
The United States tried helping Cuba establish a democracy
They ended up falling to Communism

13. Why the US was happy to gain these territories
The USA had just defeated the world’s most powerful navy in Spain
America gladly accepted these territories because:
We controlled the western hemisphere
No more colonial rule around us
We were able to put military bases in the Pacific
The US briefly lost its foot-hole in the Pacific with the onset of WWII, but was eventually able to gain it back
