1 Getting to Know Each Other Through Data Analysis and Venn Diagrams

2 Data Analysis / Graphing
In your table group, write down 2 questions you would like to ask to the class in order to discover something interesting about your classmates. A non-interesting example would be, “What year were you born in? 1994? 1995? 1996?” You will only use one question. The second is a back-up in case another group asks the same question. Take 2 minutes to write these 2 questions (or sets of questions) down now. Getting to Know Each Other Through Data Analysis and Venn Diagrams

3 Data Analysis / Graphing
Starting with table 6 and going backwards, green dot will ask their number 1 question to the class. Red dot will record the data. Students will stand when the question applies to them so that the group can accurately collect the data. Note: Don’t forget to include yourself and your group members when collecting data! 4 Data Analysis / Graphing
You will be creating 3 different graphs using a Google Doc spreadsheet to display the data you collect. (Marra will now show an example of Class Gender Breakdown.) 3 Graphs are as follows: A scatter plot A column graph A pie chart Getting to Know Each Other Through Data Analysis and Venn Diagrams

5 Data Analysis / Graphing
You will need to 1) Print each plot (3 total), and 2) answer the following questions on the back or front of each of the plots. A scatter plot On the back: 1) Is there any trend? If so, how would you categorize it? 2) If more students were added to this class, do you think you could predict their responses to the question you posed based on this plot? A column graph On the back: 1) What trend(s) is(are) this plot showing? 2) How is it similar to or different than the scatter plot? 3) What plot (scatter or column) better displayed the data? Why do you think this is? A pie chart Find the fraction, decimal and percent for each section of the pie. Write these values in the corresponding pie section. Somewhere else on the front of the plot, write 3 significant ratios. Can any of these ratios be written as a proportion? If so, write the proportions. Recall, a Venn Diagram is a way to organize sets of related data in a logical way. You will be working in three groups of 3 and one group of 4. When you meet with your group, first label circles A, B, C (and possibly D). See example. Getting to Know Each Other Through Data Analysis and Venn Diagrams

In the place where all 3 (or 4) circles intersect, you will write at least 2 things that everyone in your group has in common. In the outer parts of the circles (parts that don’t overlap), you are writing things that are unique to you. The other sections will be filled out accordingly. You will be working in three groups of 3 and one group of 4. When you meet with your group, first label circles A, B, C (and possibly D). See example. Each group will produce one Venn Diagram Make a legend somewhere on the front so we know who corresponds to A, B, C, and D. When you are done filling in the information, INDIVIDUALLY (on the note card I give you) answer 4 of the following questions. Turn these note cards in to the HW tray. See example on board. Directions You will have approx. 30 minutes to complete each exercise. What you don’t finish on the computer or out in the Commons, will be HW. Tables 1,4, 6 go to computers and login. Login and password sheets are by the computers as a reminder. Need to go to Tables 2, 3, 5 will go out into the Commons and work on the Venn Diagrams. Groups for Venn Diagrams are divided by dot color. Red dots work together, green dots work together, etc. No dot will work with blue dots.
