Data and Analysis Graphs

Georgia Performance Standards M5D1. Students will analyze graphs. a. Analyze data presented in a graph. b. Compare and contrast multiple graphic representations (circle graphs, line graphs, line plot graphs, pictographs, Venn diagrams, and bar graphs) for a single set of data and discuss the advantages/disadvantages of each.

Georgia Performance Standards M5D2. Students will collect, organize, and display data using the most appropriate graph.

Vocabulary Pictograph – is a visual display of data (graph) that uses symbols or pictures. It must have a key to tell what the symbols mean. Bar graph- is a visual display of data (graph) that uses horizontal or vertical bars Double bar graph- is a graph in which data are compared by means of pairs of bars drawn next to each other

Vocabulary Histogram – a graph in which bars are used to display how frequently data occurs within equal intervals Frequency table – a table used to record the number of times a response is chosen Tally marks – a series of lines and slash marks that are used to record how many times an event occurs; used as part of a frequency table

Vocabulary Circle graph – is a graph that represents 100% of data. It is best used when things are broken into parts. Each section represents parts of the whole. Venn Diagram – is a graph that is made up of two or more circles. It is best used for comparing and contrasting items. The overlapping areas represent the similarities among items. Line graph – is a graph that is made up of dots connected by lines. This graph is used to show change over time. Double line graph – a graph that is used to compare two or more sets of data over time

What does a pictograph show? Pictograph use pictures to display data. You can easily see which category has the most or the least. Pictographs give exact numbers, you do not estimate totals.

What does a bar graph show? Bar graphs are similar to pictographs. They easily show which category has the most or the least. Estimation should be used when bars do not reach the lines. Bar graphs are used to compare items.

What does a double bar graph show? Double bar graphs compare sets of data using two or more sets of bars of different colors. There must be a key showing what the bars mean. Show relationships amongst data.

What does a histogram show? A histogram shows a continuation of an event A bar graph leaves space between the bars because they are separate events.

What does a circle graph show? A circle graph shows 100% of the data. All the sections added together must equal 100 when the numbers are in percent. The sections represent different parts of the whole.

What does a Venn Diagram show? A Venn Diagram helps you to compare and contrast items. Comparing and contrasting means to see what the items have that are alike and are different. Overlapping areas show similarities.

What does a line graph show? A line graph shows change over time. The data is plotted with points and then connected by lines. This graph is best used to show how things increase (go up) or decrease (go down) over time.

What does a double line graph show? A double line graph also shows change over time, but it compares this with two or more sets of data. Each set of data is plotted separately on the same graph. This graph easily shows increases and decreases over time.

How are graphs misleading? In a bar graph more data is shown than what was told. On a circle graph, sections must be proportionate to the amounts they represent. On bar and line graphs, the scales must increase by equal intervals. On the scale, look out for the “squiggly” line that leaves out numbers. This is misleading because the missing numbers make the graph look larger.
