1 The Civil Rights Movement

2 Background Abolitionists were people who thought slavery was wrong.
Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves during the Civil War with the Emancipation Proclamation.

3 Important Early Protest
Early in the 1900s, African-Americans started to protest the Jim Crow laws to enforce segregation. Several African-Americans leaders such as W.E.B Du Bois and Ida B. Wells founded the NAACP in 1909.

4 Major Events in the Movement
In 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat on the bus to a white passenger. Martin Luther King Jr. lead non-violent protest including the Birmingham Campaign and the March on Washington.

5 Civil Rights Act of 1964 This act, signed into law by President Johnson, outlawed segregation and the Jim Crow laws of the south. It also outlawed discrimination based on race, national background, and gender.

6 Voting rights Act of 1965 In 1965 another law passed that said citizens could not be denied the right to vote on there race. It outlawed literacy test and poll taxes.
