2 Learning Targets I can answer comprehension questions based on text from Esperanza Rising that I have read independently. I can make inferences from the text about Esperanza and mama in Esperanza Rising. I can begin to describe how Esperanza is changing. I can interpret big metaphors in Esperanza Rising. I can identify themes in Esperanza Rising.

3 Entrance Quiz and Oral Review
Distribute entrance quiz. Students have 5 minutes to complete. Review chapter. What is the chapter about? Why is the chapter titled “Potatoes”? Review learning targets.

4 Answering Questions in Triads
Students will add to character notes while talking. Use Text-Dependent Questions Read question 1. Students re-read pages to find evidence to answer. Read question 2, 3,4,5. Make sure students added to charater T-charts for Mama and Esperanza

5 How Much is Esperanza Changing?
Re-read learning target “I can begin to describe how Esperanza is changing.” Using their marked text, students will stand with a partner and orally discuss the following prompt: “How is Esperanza changing?” Continue until each student has shared with at least three other students.

6 Abuelita’s Blanket Read learning target: “I can determine the metaphors and themes in Esperanza Rising.” Using anchor chart, students should read aloud any notes charted about the metaphor of Abuelita’s blanket. Read p Text reads “Esperanza looked at Mama, breathing uneasily, her eyes closed. It was clear Mama needed Abuelita” Study the word “uneasily”

7 Continue Read p What metaphor does the author use to describe Mama being sick? Why did she choose this metaphor? On page 160 “Esperanza picked up the needlework and began where Abuelita had let off.” What seems important about Esperanza “beginning” the blanket “where Abuelita left off”.

8 Independent Writing Review learning targets.
Students respond to prompt: “How is Esperanza changing?” Add new metaphors to the Metaphors and Themes in Esperanza Rising anchor chart. Homework : Read Chapter 11: Los Aguacates/Avocadoes
