Presentation on theme: "Earth’s External Energy"— Presentation transcript:

1 Earth’s External Energy
Took 4-5 weeks Depending on what students remember from 8th grade. 3 Quarter

2 Big Question How do people model and predict the effects of human activities on Earth's climate? Have students record their thinking to this question. Collect and hold for student do a comparison after

3 Let’s examine the following:
On the next few slides I am going to show you some information. Please look for trends, predict what you think is going on, and what connections they have to each other. This can be done as a station rotation or collectively as a class. Prelab sheet

11 Discussion: What do you think is happening?
Create a model to explain what you think is going on Record students ideas as they discuss their models

12 So let’s talk about Heat:
You are going to be responsible for reading one topic about heat. You are to make a poster including models to illustrate this principal. You will be sharing your information with the class as a Jig Saw Activity. Gallery Walk of Notes Jigsaw activity: Could give your own article/ reading Aligned with book: Conduction page 152 Convection Page Radiation Page 155 specific Heat capacity Temperature: Heat: Latent Heat/Phase Change: (Break into 2 groups)

13 So how does this heat get to us and what happens once it gets here.
Energy budget activity Discussion Modify Models Electromagnetic Spectrum POGIL Activity Make sure you cover the change in wavelength for reflected energy

14 How does this energy affect the structures on earth?
Land Verse Water Lab Discuss Weather verse Climate Make Climographs-Discuss Climate Verse Weather POGIL

15 How does your location affect you?
What do these locations have in common? What do you notice about temperatures and rainfall?

16 Now let’s look at inland climograph?
How do these differ? Picture on right is Kansas City Middle is Oklahoma

17 So what about Michigan

18 Let’s take a closer look at what scientists think is going on.
You work work collaboratively with a partner. Afterward have students revisit their models.

19 Day After Tomorrow Please record your thoughts about what you see in the movie could really happen and what you think if ficticous. Be ready to discuss what in this movie ties in with what we have learned.
