3 What is the Florida Standards Assessment?
The FSA is an authentic assessment that includes more than just multiple choice questions. Students will be expected to respond to multiple choice questions, create graphs, write and respond in different ways than on other traditional tests. The FSA will prepare Florida students for success in college, career, and in life by emphasizing analytical thinking Measures student mastery of standards taught Meets high quality standards for assessment, including reliability and validity for a variety of accountability purposes Emphasizes critical thinking

4 FSA Test Dates and Information
English Language Arts Paper Based, 56 – 64 Questions Number of Words per Passage: April 17-18 2 sessions- 80 minutes each Mathematics Computer Based, Questions May 9-10

5 Achievement Levels The success a student has achieved with the Florida Standards will be assessed by FSA ELA and Mathematics assessments and is described by Achievement Levels that range from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). Level 3 indicates satisfactory performance.

6 Third Grade Promotion Requirements F.S.1008.25
To be promoted to fourth grade, a third grade student must score a Level 2 or above on the statewide FSA-ELA. Will students scoring a Level 1 on the grade 3 statewide FSA-ELA be retained? Third grade is the only grade at which there is state-mandated retention for public school students Florida Statute (5), requires that any third-grade student scoring Level 1 on the grade 3 statewide FSA-ELA be retained Some students may qualify for a good cause exemption and may be promoted to fourth grade If a student’s reading deficiency is not remedied by the end of third grade, as demonstrated by scoring at level 2 on the FSA in reading for grade 3 the student must be retained. Good Cause Exemptions Portfolio- Administered during the 2nd semester All 3rd grade students will complete portfolio Administered in a span of several weeks. Students will complete one passage each week. It is the 2nd opportunity for a student to be promoted to grade 4 Student must demonstrate mastery of each benchmark Alternative Standardized Reading Assessment (ASRA)- Administered the last 2 weeks of school Participants -Students scoring a level 1 -Students without a passing reading portfolio Represents the 3rd opportunity within the school year prior to retention

7 Good Cause Exemptions Limited English proficient students who have less than 2 years of instruction in an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program based on the Date of Entry into a US School A student who demonstrates through a student portfolio that he or she is performing at least at a Level 2 . The M-DCPS Grade 3 Reading Student Portfolio is in place for all grade three students. Students who demonstrate an acceptable level of performance on an alternative standardized reading or English Language Arts assessment approved by the State Board of Education

8 Third Grade Portfolio Assessment
Test Administration Window: End of January through May 2018 The Grade 3 Reading Student Portfolio is used to gather information on students’ Reading proficiency on the English Language Arts benchmarks assessed on the Florida Standards Assessment. The portfolio provides multiple opportunities during the second semester to compile evidence of students’ reading mastery, which may be used in promotion decisions. Grade 3 students who did not achieve the required minimum score on the Florida Standards Assessment but have three acceptable demonstrations on each English Language Arts benchmark may be promoted to grade 4. Third Grade Portfolio will be used as Good Cause Promotion Criteria

Your child will take home a Portfolio Grade Summary each week, please review, initial and return to your child’s teacher the following day. Students have to have 3 acceptable demonstrations per standard.

16 How can I help my child at home?
Ask your child about their school day and visit their teacher’s website on a daily basis Help infuse what is being learned in class at home READ with your child at least minutes each day. Read different types of books and informational text with your child every night. Ask your child questions about what they read and prompt them to think critically by using text-based evidence Encourage your child to form and defend an opinion by supporting it with facts, details and reasons from text Discuss mathematical ideas with your child and have them explain these to you using pictures, graphs, etc. Have your child complete at least two i-Ready math lessons and two i-Ready reading lessons a week. Visit the Florida Standards Assessment online portal at: Use this website to read about updates, and have your child complete the training tests in both Reading and Math.
