2 Our Kingsley Values!

3 Democracy Individual Liberty Rule of Law Mutual Respect
These are the four fundamental British values. Their not really just ‘British’ values, they’re world and human values, too.

4 Kingsley’s values ARE British values

5 A Question to think about…..
Who is in charge of the UK? Think about this. I’ll ask you for answers at the end

6 DEMOCRACY = The Rule of the People

7 The Monarch (Henry VIII here) had absolute power with their Lords
The Monarch and the Lords owned most of the land – that gave them power Everyone else didn’t have a say in how the country was run and many people lived in really unfair poverty Taxes didn’t get spent on the poor and needy, they were used to fund wars – very unfair!

8 In the 17th century some people protested saying the land was as much theirs as the Lords’
The people had a ‘Parliament’ (taken from a French word meaning ‘place to speak’), but this had no real power All this led to a civil war in the 1640s between the Monarch (and Lords) and the people (parliament) – the people won As time went on , Parliament gained even more power from the Monarch and ‘The Commons’ (the parliament of the people, with elected representatives) now runs the country

9 SCHOOL COUNCIL LOCAL COUNCIL LONDON ASSEMBLY NATIONAL GOVERNMENT
How are YOU going to get involved? It’s important to make your vote count!

10 Who runs the UK? Well, technically, it’s the Queen, but she has no real power. The real power is in the elected ‘House of Commons’ (the people’s elected parliament)
