1 CO2 Dragster Vocabulary
Car Builder Model

3 Chassis – is the structural frame of car and determines the size and the mounting position the parts such as the engine, transmission, seating, and overall weight of the vehicle. Internal combustion Engine– is a system of pistons, valves, crankshaft, and various working parts to produce work from fuel and air mixture..

4 Displacement – Engine size determined by the difference between the maximum and minimum and is measured in liters or CU IN (Cubic inches). 100 cubic inches equal approximately 1.6 liters. The Transmission – allows the gear ratio between the engine and the drive wheels so the engine can stay below the redline and near the rpm band of its best performance.

5 Vocabulary Science Torque – is a force that tends to rotate, twist or turn things. Tightening the lug nuts on your wheels or an engine twisting the transmission are good examples. This will affect acceleration at low speeds. Horsepower – A unit of power, used in measuring the work required to drive machinery or cars, and in estimating the capabilities of animals. It is the power that will affect top speed and acceleration.

6 Aerodynamics – The shape of an object and it effects of airflow or friction of air passing the moving vehicle. This may prevent your car from going very fast. This is measured as Drag coefficient. Top speed – maximum rate of travel acceleration –is the rate of increased velocity. We have tests that measure cars performance for comparisons; these are 0-60 and a 1/4mile.

7 cruising range –distance traveled on one tank of fuel. compressed air – air at a pressure greater than that of the atmosphere; "compressed air is often used to power machines" weight – A unit measure of gravitational force

8 thrust – The force that propels an object in a given direction, especially when generated by the object itself, as by an engine or rocket.   Friction/Drag – A force on objects or substances(Air) in contact with each other that resists motion of the objects or substances relative to each other.

9 Inertia – The resistance of a body to changes in its momentum
Inertia – The resistance of a body to changes in its momentum. Because of inertia, a body at rest remains at rest, and a body in motion continues moving in a straight line and at a constant speed, unless a force is applied to it. Newton's 1st Law – An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force, such as wind resistance.

10 Newton's 2nd Law –states that “the force acting on a body is equal to the acceleration of that body times its mass.” Expressed mathematically, __F = M A____, where F is the force in Newton’s, m is the mass of the body in kilograms, and a is the acceleration in meters per second per second. Newton's 3rd Law –states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This law lies behind the design of rocket, jet and CO2 propulsion.

11 Drafting Vocabulary drafting – A method of communication detailed information about a proposed object or device. Orthographic View – the least distorted type of drawing. Showing front and top views object lines – Shows defined edges of object being drawn

12 hidden Lines– lines that represent details beneath or behind current view of object
construction lines– light lines used to arrange and align construction or hidden lines. Scale – ratio or size difference on drawing versus actual object.

13 Parts Vocabulary Axle – A supporting shaft or member on or with which a wheel or a set of wheels revolves. Screw Eye – a wood screw with its end bent into a ring. Motor______ – A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy.

14 Dragster____ – car specially built or modified for drag racing.
wheels – A solid disk or a rigid circular ring connected by spokes to a hub, designed to turn around an axle passed through the center.

15 Vocabulary Tools Drill press – A powered vertical drilling machine in which the drill is pressed to the work automatically or by a hand lever. band saw – a power-operated saw consisting of an endless toothed metal band running over and driven by two wheels. scroll saw – A reciprocating saw for cutting curved or irregular shapes.

16 sand paper – Heavy paper coated on one side with sand or other abrasive material and used for smoothing surfaces. file – Any of several hardened steel tools with cutting ridges for forming, smoothing, or reducing especially metallic surfaces. rasps– A coarse file with sharp, raised, pointed projections.
