6 Objectives for today…. Teachers will be able to:
recognize opportunities for creating language objectives to reinforce content write a language objective for a content topic and create an activity to support the objective

7 Big Ideas Effective lessons maximize opportunities for learning by incorporating content and language objectives that reinforce reading, writing, listening and speaking. Objectives must be made explicit to students so they know what they are expected to learn each day.

8 Model SIOP Lesson Unit: Geography
SOL 3.5 The student will develop map skills by: b) using the equator and prime meridian to identify the four hemispheres e) locating specific places on a simple letter-number grid system

10 Objectives for Students
Today we will practice map skills by locating a place on the map using a grid name the hemisphere the place is in To practice using the geography words, we will: tell sentences to a partner about the location listen to a partner’s sentences and politely agree or disagree

12 Instructions….. 1) Mark a location on your world map grid.
2) Practice saying your sentences to yourself. 3) When teacher says “go”, find your partner and tell your locations to each other. Tell if you agree or disagree with your partner. 4) Repeat the activity with two more partners.

Jot down strategies observed that could benefit struggling learners II. How could this kind of speaking/listening activity be adapted for your teaching assignment and students?

14 How do I carry out an effective language objective?
1. Post your key vocabulary and refer to the words throughout the activity. 2. Tell students the language objective for this activity. 3. Model the activity for students, emphasizing the key vocabulary they are to practice. 4. Allow students to practice independently. 5. Assess mastery. 6. Review the objective at the end of class.
